Where Justice Meets Compassion: Gregory’s Second Chance

As a Louisville Metro Government Courthouse Ambassador, Gregory Conley is often the first face people see in the Hall of Justice. From his post behind a high-traffic desk, it’s Gregory’s job to point visitors to the Jefferson County Courts in the right direction. In his 15 years as a civil servant, Gregory knows courts rarely see people at their best. Visitors often feel overwhelmed, stressed, and frustrated by a legal system that can be hard to decipher. To help alleviate this stress, Gregory proudly directs people not just around the Hall of Justice, but also to Legal Aid Society’s myriad of help for civil legal needs.

Gregory recommends Legal Aid Society’s services not just as a representative of the Jefferson County Courts but also as a former Legal Aid client. “I even keep a stack of Brian’s cards to hand out,” he said, referring to his case attorney, Brian Fields. “You all do great work for people who need help.”

Like so many, Gregory used to struggle to make ends meet. He had significant medical debt, outstanding student loans, and a substantial car payment, in addition to his regular expenses, such as groceries, rent, and medical care. To stay on top of these bills, Gregory opened a credit card and quickly accumulated debt on it as well. As private and federal debt mounted, accompanied by astronomical interest rates, Gregory knew he needed help. He didn’t hesitate to reach out to friends at Legal Aid Society.

Altogether, Legal Aid Society’s team of attorneys was able to get more than $35,000.00 in private debt discharged for Gregory, as well as more than $15,000.00 in student loans. Attorney Brian Fields also stopped the repossession of Gregory’s vehicle, wiped all of Gregory’s medical and student loan debt, and recovered $717.00 in garnished wages. Due to Gregory’s partnership with Legal Aid, he is debt-free today.

Gregory credits his attorney, Brian, with taking a massive weight off his shoulders. “My future looks happy,” he said. “I got a fresh start.” Legal Aid Society is proud to have given Mr. Conley and so many others with similar stories a new chance at economic stability. We believe every person deserves a second chance at financial security and lasting happiness.

In 2024, the Legal Aid Society’s Economic Stability and Advocacy Project assisted 1,543 individuals with issues affecting their economic stability, resolving 2,668 cases for these clients.

“I’ll keep sending people your way,” said Gregory. “Legal Aid is the place to get help.”
