WHAT WE DO

Legal Aid Society provides FREE civil legal assistance and representation to Kentuckians whose incomes are at or below 125 to 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. 

Founded in 1921, our mission is to “pursue justice for people in poverty.” We serve the following fifteen Kentucky counties: Breckinridge, Bullitt, Grayson, Hardin, Henry, Jefferson, Larue, Marion, Meade, Nelson, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer, Trimble, Washington.

PERSONAL SAFETY + FAMILY STABILITY

Legal Aid Society advocacy supports the well-being of the family and promotes personal safety. To ensure our clients’ personal safety & family stability, we assist with the following:

  • Protective orders for survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking

  • Divorces for survivors and assistance for those representing themselves (pro se assistance)

  • Custody and visitation 

  • Guardianship

  • Economic supports for children

  • Educational rights

SECURE HOUSING

Legal Aid Society advocacy supports the right of all people to be safe and secure in their home. To help our clients secure and maintain access to safe, sanitary, and affordable housing, we assist with the following:

  • Eviction and landlord/tenant disputes

  • Uninhabitability and code violations

EMPOWER COMMUNITIES

Legal Aid Society advocacy removes barriers to civil legal aid due to age, sex, disability, veteran status, involvement in the criminal legal system, immigration status, geographic barriers, or communication limitations. We empower communities by:

  • Providing language services to those with Limited English Proficiency

  • Partnering with community service providers to meet clients where they are

  • Using technology to remove barriers like geography or disability

  • Engaging in community development

  • Developing programs specific to a population’s needs, like the following existing programs: Project H.E.L.P. (Homeless Experience Legal Protection), Project Renew (Serving survivors of substance use disorder), Veterans Legal Project, Doctors & Lawyers for Kids, and HIV/AIDS Legal Project.

PROMOTE ECONOMIC STABILITY

Legal Aid Society advocacy supports economic stability of individuals, neighborhoods, and entire communities. To promote economic stability, we assist our clients with the following:

  • Government benefits (SNAP, TANF)

  • Healthcare (Medicaid, Medicare)

  • Wage garnishments

  • Debt collection 

  • Predatory lending

  • Criminal record expungement 

  • Driver and occupational licenses

  • Nonprofit legal support 

  • Tax controversy
