Free Consumer Debt Relief Clinics Offer Guidance and Support

Debt can feel overwhelming, especially when legal paperwork, medical bills, or collection notices start piling up. To help community members better understand their rights and options, the Legal Aid Society is launching a new series of free Consumer Debt Relief Clinics throughout 2026.

These clinics are designed to give people clear information, practical guidance, and the tools they need to move forward with confidence when dealing with debt-related legal issues.

What to Expect at the Clinic

At each clinic, participants will meet one-on-one with Legal Aid staff and volunteer attorneys who will review documents, answer questions, and provide guidance on how to handle their legal matter. While these clinics do not provide full representation, they are an opportunity to receive personalized legal advice and learn what steps you can take next.

Issues We Can Help With

Currently, the clinics are focused on helping people with several common consumer debt issues, including:

  • Debt collection lawsuits where court papers were received within the last 20 days

  • Medical debt collection related to bills from Norton Healthcare, Baptist Health, or UofL Health within the past five years

  • Past rental debt or disputes related to unpaid rent

  • Student loan debt

  • Credit report errors or disputes

Upcoming Clinic Dates

The Legal Aid Society will host several clinics throughout the year. The first two scheduled clinics are:

  • Wednesday, March 25 | 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Legal Aid Society West Louisville Office

  • Friday, May 15 | 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Legal Aid Society Downtown Louisville Office

Two additional clinics will be scheduled later in 2026, with dates to be announced.

How to Participate

Contact our Intake Department at (502) 584-1254.

To ensure the clinic is the right fit for each person’s legal issue, our team will review all requests for assistance. If the clinic is appropriate for your situation, a member of our staff will follow up to gather additional information and help schedule your appointment.

Volunteer With Us

The Consumer Debt Relief Clinics also provide a meaningful opportunity for attorneys to give back to the community. Volunteer attorneys work alongside Legal Aid staff to review documents, answer questions, and help participants better understand their legal options.

These clinics are designed to be manageable and supportive for volunteers. Legal Aid staff provide background materials, guidance during the clinic, and assistance with client intake and logistics so volunteers can focus on offering advice and answering questions.

If you are interested in volunteering at an upcoming clinic, we would love to have your help. Your time and expertise can make a real difference for individuals and families working to resolve debt issues and regain financial stability. Contact Jenn Perkins, jperkins@yourlegalaid.org, to volunteer.
