Real Kentuckians. Real Justice.

At the Heart of Every Case is a Person. A Family. A Future.

When most people think of the justice system, they imagine courtrooms, laws, and legal jargon. But at the Legal Aid Society, we see something more: the faces of real Kentuckians.

this is what equal justice looks like

  • Naomi's Story

Fighting for Food and a Future

As a hardworking scholarship student at the University of Louisville, Naomi balanced full-time studies with a federal work-study job, relying on a small meal plan and modest SNAP benefits to meet her basic needs. Just before graduation, she was shocked to learn she’d been cut off from SNAP and told she owed nearly $2,000 in back benefits—wrongfully accused of ineligibility due to her student meal plan. Overwhelmed but determined, Naomi turned to Legal Aid, where our attorneys fought back, proving her benefits were fully lawful. The debt was wiped, her benefits restored, and Naomi graduated debt-free, ready to start her career with confidence and justice on her side.

  • Kevin's Story

    Record Cleared, Purpose Restored

Like thousands of Kentuckians battling substance use disorder—an issue that affects 1 in 10 residents—Kevin made mistakes in his youth that led to drug convictions. Though he turned his life around years ago and now works helping others with similar struggles, his past kept resurfacing—causing him shame and anxiety with every background check. Legal Aid Society stepped in and successfully expunged Kevin’s record, giving him the fresh start he deserved. Now, free from the shadow of his past, Kevin continues making a difference in his community—proof that recovery deserves dignity, not a lifetime sentence.

  • Chelsea's Story

    Hope for a New Beginning

When Chelsea came to Legal Aid, she was raising her son alone while enduring abuse from her husband and working toward a college degree. With the help of Legal Aid attorneys, she secured a protective order, safely left her abuser, and gained access to transitional housing through Family Scholar House. Our team also helped her obtain SNAP benefits, Medicaid, and financial aid. Today, Chelsea is enrolled in a flexible college program, financially stable, and thriving in a life free from abuse—proof that with legal advocacy and wraparound support, a new beginning is possible.

I’m no longer a felon. I don’t have to check the felon box anymore. I’m no longer the lone felonious family member. I voted last year. I can see life clearer now.

The Legal Services Corporation (LSC) provides essential civil legal aid to millions of low-income Americans to protect their rights and secure equal access to justice.

Proposals to eliminate LSC would leave some of the most vulnerable Americans without help when they need it most.
