Legal Aid Society secures ONE MILLION DOLLARS in food benefits in 2023
As you gather to enjoy a warm meal with your loved ones this Thanksgiving, know that hundreds of Kentuckians are able to do the same because you support Legal Aid Society.
Legal Aid Society's Government Benefits Unit, staffed by attorneys Jeff Brown, Andrew Chandler, Emily Pinerola, paralegals Kyauna Black and Kristi Miller, and student fellow Paige White, has secured over $1 million in food stamps for Kentuckians. The program assists with enrollment for homeless individuals and legal representation in denials and appeals.
The program has been so successful that Legal Aid Society was recently awarded a $100,000 grant from the Humana Foundation to expand services in order to partner with Dare to Care.
Legal Aid Society's Veteran program featured in TALK JUSTICE, Legal Services Corporation's national podcast
In early 2022, Legal Aid Society received a grant from the VA Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention program to expand our medical-legal partnership with Robley Rex VA Medical Center. The program resolves the social determinants of health that contribute to the rate of Veteran suicide in the Commonwealth (the highest in the country). Jeff Staton, Managing Attorney of our Community Empowerment Department, was featured in LSC's Talk Justice Podcast to discuss the impact and importance of this work.
Legal Aid Society names new Advocacy Director and Deputy Director
Melissa Weinstein is now Legal Aid Society's new Advocacy Director, having previously served as Senior Attorney of the Economic Stability Unit. She has focused her practice on consumer law, debt defense, and expungements.
John Young has stepped into the role of Deputy Director. John has been with Legal Aid Society since graduating law school. He has served in various roles, most recently as the Directing Attorney of Intake. He has had a wide-ranging practice representing clients in bankruptcy, family, probate, and tax matters.
