The Legal Aider - January 2022

January 2022 is Legal Aid Society’s 100th January! While an anniversary is a great opportunity to celebrate the past, the new year is a time to march forward. Over the next few months, we will reveal some of our grand centennial plans.

but first, a sneak peak…

In December, Legal Aid Society marked our 100th Anniversary with a special event at the Brandeis School of Law. If you missed the occasion, you can stream the program by clicking here.

THANK YOU BOB EWALD FOR 50 YEARS OF SERVICE!

In December, long-time and much-loved board member Robert Ewald stepped down from our Board of Directors. Bob joined our board in 1972 and played many important roles over the decades, including Chair of the Board from 1991 to 1993 and most recently as Chair of the Nominating and Recruitment Committee. Bob, a retired Partner of Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs, was also instrumental in the creation of Louisville’s Public Defender Office in the mid-1970s.

As Kendrick Riggs, Chair of our Board and Partner at Stoll Keenon Ogden, recently said, “We owe Mr. Ewald a debt of gratitude for his life of service that cannot be fully repaid. The only way to repay Bob’s contribution to Legal Aid Society and our community is to pay it forward. Bob, you can count on us to make you proud! Thank you for your service and shining example of servant leadership.”

THIS IS WHAT EQUAL JUSTICE LOOKS LIKE.

Jake, a 55-year-old homeless veteran, met our Project H.E.L.P. attorney at St. John’s Center for Homeless Men. When Jake was living in shelter and could not scrape together two pennies, he had applied to Social Security Disability for assistance. Jake’s attorney reviewed his paperwork and found that Jake had been approved for SSDI benefits. However, Jake had not yet received any money.

Fortunately, through a new virtual program with St. John’s Center, Jake and his attorney met that day with a Social Security Administration rep on Zoom. During the meeting, they learned that Jake had missed the required interview to set up payments. Without a stable address or phone number, Jake had no way of learning about the interview. Thankfully, the Social Security rep was able to conduct Jake’s interview during their virtual meeting. Within 10 days, Jake received his first monthly payment, as well as the first installment of a sizable back payment. Now he has the financial stability that he needs to find a permanent place to live.

Project H.E.L.P. is Legal Aid Society’s homeless advocacy program, providing critical and life-saving legal intervention to those experiencing homelessness. The winter is an especially difficult season for our homeless clients. Please consider volunteering with our program. Just a few hours of your time at one of our bi-monthly clinics can CHANGE A LIFE. Visit YourLegalAid.org/volunteer to get involved.

MEET EMILY A. LOGAN

attorney in our family law and personal safety units

“I am a Legal Aider because I believe access to justice is something every person is entitled to regardless of their financial status. As a family law practitioner, I understand that divorce and custody actions can be emotionally taxing in the best of situations, this is especially true for survivors of domestic violence. Being able to serve as an advocate for these survivors and assist in easing the burden of navigating the court system is something I take great pride in. Legal Aid’s tradition of providing high quality representation and treating all clients with the respect and dignity they deserve is something we can all be proud to call ourselves a part of.”
